Gong Show – really bizarre act, trust me Video Unique

This kind of tap dancing, also called rhythm tap, came primarily from cities or poor areas.

On this clip from the syndicated evening edition of “The Gong Show” from 1977 Chuck Barris first reads an article from a newspaper which takes aim at the program. Chuck dedicates the following act to the article’s author. Strap in, this is a rough one…

This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician and thus, for example, the American composer Morton Gould was able to compose a concerto for tap dancer and orchestra.

The best examples of this style are found in Broadway musicals such as 42nd Street.

Here’s is a short video clip of a dance routine from an upcoming show at the Garde Theater in New London, CT. It was choreographed by one of the 1941 Rockettes, Louise Neistat. Please excuse the amateur camera work LOL;)

The dance was also popular in variety shows and early musicals.

Savion Glover is the best-known living hoofer, who helped bring tap dance into mainstream media by choreographing and dancing for the major motion picture Happy Feet.

Strange tap dancing video with the Goddess Bunny herself!

This style of tap led to what is today known as broadway style, which is more mainstream in American culture.
